Zara in Sydney

image
It must have been fate, my trip to Sydney coincided with the opening of Zara’s first store in Australia. Giving in to my love for European fashion my boyfriend kindly obliged to accompany me, and lined up with me in the cold and rain with many other fashionistas and others who were just plain nosy to see what the craze was all about. With 3 levels of fast fashion in front of me as I entered Zara, I almost had to wipe the drool from the corner of my mouth. Despite the fact that all of the styles were from the trends of Spring 11, this did not stop a single woman nor the metrosexual male from snatching up the spring brights and floral prints that were trended straight from the runway.
Whilst my dedicated boyfriend proceeded to line up for me in the muddled chaos for the changing rooms I swiftly snatched up all the items I had my eye on whilst lining up. By the time I had finished I was in prime position to try on my findings.
Waiting to try the clothes on I began to observe my surroundings, the opening of Zara had brought out the woman’s inner scavenger where groups of them were picking at the near empty carcasses of the hanging racks. Others with extreme enthusiasm simply began changing in the middle of the store to avoid having to line up in the ever lengthening line to the changing rooms.
Overall my trip was a success resulting in the purchase of a top, 2 jackets and a vest. In terms of comparison to other Australian chainstores, I believe Zara has a real chance in the Australian market. With reasonable and at times cheaper prices similar to that of Esprit, Witchery and Country Road and the Runway to Store speed that no other brand can compete with, this will just be the beginning for the Spanish chainstore in Australia. Perhaps the success of the Spaniards in Australia will extend from Nadal’s 09 Australian Open win and become something that will increase the competitiveness in the currently overpriced and slow moving Australian Fashion Industry.
